The story of our team is one where lives have been weaved together for over a decade in different ways and in different spaces. Combining forces brings together diverse skills around the core passion of developing positive gender identity and preventing gender-based violence.

The birth of Asante Gender Action gives meaning to the famous Hugo quote: There is nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come!

Our founder Gil Harper is passionate about creating positive gender identity as the basis for changing toxic masculinity and empowering women in the home, community, workplace and in political decision making.

“My own story is that I am a survivor of domestic violence. Most of my life I have been involved in gender in one way or another. During the last ten years I have been leading programmes and initiatives with young people, reimagining and reshaping masculinity, femininity and sexuality,” says Gil.

She believes that change is based on action and advocacy and drew together a dynamic team to drive change: Neliswa Mncube as the Chairperson, Aron Corton as Marketing Officer, Sherwin Nel as Media and Fundraising Director and Thuks Khanyile as Programme Manager.

Gil has shared work, life and friendship with each one for many years and together as a team they are committed to innovation and impact.
